![]() I hope this play can bring about change in the law system, even if just a little bit. This was hard to read at certain points, but it brings attention to the issue of how normalised sexual assault is in a way that is so powerful. This play is so powerful in its portrayal of the event and the aftermath - including the sexual assault as a scene allows us to see how the defence twists and reframes Tessa's experience in a way that makes it seem like she was not a victim. Prima Facie shows how rape becomes nullified by the legal system, which fails to recognise the ways. This play highlights the sheer injustice within the legal system, and how it sways in the perpetrator's favour under the pretence that the victim "cannot be believed." Tessa's experience is one that one in three women experience in their lifetime, though many cases do not make it to court. Perhaps this is a subtle nod to Miller’s own trajectory into the realm of theatre-as-tribunal. Prima Facie tells the story of a successful defence barrister who finds herself in the witness box after experiencing a sexual assault. ![]() This play is brilliant, and I am so upset I never got the chance to see Jodie Comer perform this live. Oh, and most importantly, for our quote of the month. Today, she works with children and families bringing awareness to the various energies that make. Once a seasoned pediatric speech pathologist, Suzy experienced a breakthrough realization while working with a 4-year-old child diagnosed with autism. Overall, a fairly well received piece, and we can't wait to see it performed. Suzy Miller, author of Awesomism: A New Way to Understand the Diagnosis of Autism, thinks so. However, that being said, the slightly broad nature of the play and it's intended audience gives the opportunity to have the discussion at all, which can't be a bad thing. Further, when it comes to the difficult subject matter, some thought that while it is a modern play, there is room in 2022 for a more nuanced conversation. We enjoyed the educational elements, the opportunity to get perspective on the procedural items, but some wished that could have been explored in more depth. But ironically, a lot of the issues we had with this seem to have come from the limitations of the medium. ![]() At the time of review this play (maybe our first ever, the jury is still out) slides into a very close second place for our top books of the year! Fighting through GCSE English flashbacks to Shakespeare, many enjoyed the opportunity to explore a different medium to our usual novel/non-fiction. ![]()
